A floating fence was created to give to this small overlooked garden in south east London a little more privacy, yet without compromising the sense of space of light.
Slatted red cedar screens were created that allowed light to pass through, and when standing, views beyond the garden boundary are retained. When seated, the screens gave a sense of privacy and seclusion required.
Galvanised steel posts set deep into the ground support the timber screens above the wall, as the old garden wall was too fragile to fix directly too.
The fence floats around the edge of the garden, and the horizontal slats make the garden feel a little bit longer as they lead your eye to the back of the space.
